Types Of Garage Door Installations

Garage Doors

One of the greatest ways you can give your garage a serious facelift is to replace your garage door. While it may seem like an extremely easy task to check off your to-do list, there are still some elements of replacing a garage door that can prove challenging if you decide to forgo the professionals and do it yourself.

This guide is designed to walk you through the various types of garage doors out there, where you can buy them, and how you can install them yourself, should you decide to.

What are Overhead Garage Doors?
Overhead garage doors are manufactured in a couple of different ways based on their size. One option is made up of several collapsible panels which are drawn up by an electric motor to lift and lower the door between the floor and ceiling. The other smaller option is made from a singular panel which is tilted up and lays flush against the ceiling of the garage.

How to Build / Install Three Common Garage Door Types

Carriage Garage Door Installation

Carriage garage doors can be done very inexpensively using a couple sheets of plywood. Before you do anything, you will need to take measurements of your garage opening so that you know how big to build your carriage doors. Cut two pieces of 3/4 plywood to be the same size in order to fill the space.

You can use 1×6 plywood or any scraps that you have lying around for the trim design. Attach, the trim using wood glue and screws. To finish, simply prime, paint, and attach your new carriage doors. These can easily be completed in a weekend making them a great option.

Wooden Garage Door Installation

For the purposes of this guide let’s assume that the garage doors being built will measure 12X9, but make sure that you measure your garage and make adjustments accordingly.

Divide the height of the door measurement by 3 and cut 3 even panels to fit those measurements.

Twice you will need to cut out two pieces (for a total of four) of 1½-by-2-inch wood studs to the width of the door less 2 inches (5 centimeters).

Now complete the rectangular frame of the doors using the two 34 inch stud pieces between the two 9 foot pieces.

Glue and screw or nail the wood pieces together and repeat so that you have three separate pieces.

Glue three sheets of plywood cut to 12’X3‘ to the frames. Screw in rollers on the top and bottom of each panel.

Roll each of your panels onto the tracks and then attach the hinges.

Attach handles on the inside and outside of your doors for opening and closing.

Barn Style Garage Door Installation

Barn style garage doors are very trendy and fairly simple to build or install yourself. Here is what you need to do:

Measure the space to determine how large your door needs to be and then divide and cut your wood into eight even panels.

Lay out the frame for your door.

Using L-brackets, attach the beams in the corners and nail to the frame.

Nail a beam across the center of the door and attach in the corners.

Repeat this process for the second door if you decide to use two.

Place four heavy-duty hinges in equal distance from one another, working from top to bottom.

Hang your new door on the frame.

Hiring a Contractor to Build / Install a Garage Door

If you are feeling a bit intimidated by the prospect of building or installing a garage door yourself, you can always hire a professional to do the job for you. Just be sure you can afford the added expense associated with calling in a contractor. Here are a few other things to consider if you’re struggling to decide:

Do they have verifiable professional and financial references?

They will probably be able to build and install it faster than you (but be sure to ask ahead of time how long it will take them).

They may charge an hourly rate and markup that will exceed the value of the door in both property and convenience.

You can expect high-quality work that will withstand the test of time.

Hiring a handy man may be a cheaper, but appropriate option.

How complicated of a door design are you looking to accomplish?

If you do decide to hire a contractor to Install your new garage door, make sure that you hire one with relevant experience and interest in the job as well.

For example, if they spend most of their time on kitchens and bathrooms, they probably aren’t best suited to be working on your garage. Although it will take some homework on your part up front, hiring a contractor to install your garage door is by far the easiest way to go.
